The regulation

Manual handling at work in Great Britain is governed by the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, S.I. 1992/2793, made under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 — in particular Regulation 4 and Schedule 1. Northern Ireland has its own equivalent regulations.

What the employer must do

  • Avoid hazardous manual handling where it is reasonably practicable to do so
  • Assess the handling operations that cannot be avoided
  • Reduce the risk of injury as far as is reasonably practicable
  • Give employees information on the load and training on safe handling

How often to refresh

There is no statutory expiry date on a manual handling certificate in GB law, and HSE does not set a fixed refresher interval. Many employers refresh at least every three years as policy, and that is the date printed on your certificate.

About “approved” courses

There is no HSE approval scheme for manual handling courses or providers. Any site claiming HSE approval is misdescribing it. What matters is that the training is adequate for the risk.

Be clear about what this course is. It is online theory plus an online test, and it is designed for lower-risk handling — office, retail, hospitality and light warehouse work. HSE guidance says manual handling training should include practical work so a trainer can spot and correct unsafe technique; this course has no practical element, so pair it with hands-on instruction at work. If your work involves higher-risk handling, patient handling, or heavy or awkward loads, book in-person training instead.

There is no HSE approval scheme for manual handling courses or providers, so no online course can honestly claim to be “HSE approved”. This course is built on HSE’s published guidance and on the requirements of the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992. Whether it satisfies your employer is ultimately their call, and it is worth confirming with them before you buy if you are training for a specific job.

GB law sets no statutory expiry date and HSE does not set a fixed refresher interval. Many employers refresh every three years as policy. Your certificate shows its issue date so the three-year point is easy to track.
