The regulation

In Great Britain the use of abrasive wheels is covered by the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) , made under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. HSE’s guidance HSG17, Safety in the use of abrasive wheels, explains how to comply in practice. Northern Ireland has its own equivalent regulations.

What the employer must do

  • Provide suitable wheels and machines, correctly guarded, with work rests where needed
  • Make sure wheels are not run faster than their maximum permitted speed
  • Ensure wheels are mounted only by people trained and competent to do so
  • Give workers information, instruction and training on the risks

Theory and hands-on training

This course covers the knowledge element. Mounting a wheel is a practical skill, so anyone who will mount wheels also needs hands-on instruction on the machines they will use.
