The regulation

Work at height in Great Britain is governed by Regulations 4–14 of the Work at Height Regulations 2005, made under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. Northern Ireland has its own equivalent regulations.

What the employer must do

  • Avoid work at height where it is reasonably practicable to do the job another way
  • Where it cannot be avoided, plan and organise the work properly and have it supervised
  • Choose suitable equipment, with collective protection given priority over personal protection
  • Make sure equipment is inspected and that workers are trained and competent

The order of control

  • Avoid working at height
  • Prevent falls — guard-rails, platforms, safe access
  • Minimise the distance and consequences of a fall — nets, fall-arrest

Online theory and hands-on skills

The online modules give you the knowledge and the assessment checks it. Hands-on skills — such as fitting and checking a harness or using specific access equipment — still need to be taught and checked in person at work.

Be clear about what this course is. It is online theory plus an online assessment. It does not replace site-specific instruction, supervision or practical training on the particular access equipment you will use — for example harness, MEWP or scaffold training.
